We finally managed a venture out, here at Post Office House, to visit Longstone Island and lighthouse recently. Ourselves and around 30 other people, were part of an evening private charter boat trip with MV Golden Gate, run by our very knowledgeable and enthusiastic skipper, George Shiel. The National Trust Farne Islands Rangers also joined us, where we all enjoyed a picnic in the lighthouse.
The weather was simply glorious, and as George said, could not have had better sailing conditions or a nicer evening to see some stunning scenery and wonderful wildlife including puffins, guillimots and grey seals. Grace Darling lived at Longstone Lighthouse where her father was the keeper and made her famous rescue from.
MV Golden Gate Boat Trips are the only licensed boat company to land on Longstone Island and to actually visit inside the lighthouse itself. Information on George’s boat trips can be found here
We caught some great images of the various bird life which dominate the Farne Islands at this time of year and are joined by the lovely Grey Seals. We sadly, did not see any dolphins on our trip but George did capture a glimpse of a porpoise (we weren’t quick enough to catch a photo!). Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne Castles were all clearly visible and it was a superb evening had by all.
We simply had to share some photos we took and would love to include them all but here is a taster of what you can expect if you book onto one of George’s trips. A boat can also be hired for private parties for an evening cruise and is a great and unique idea for a special occasion or a team building/corporate event.
Highly recommended and would like to extend a big thank you to George, Steve and the team. We most certainly will be doing this again! You can follow The Golden Gate and George Shiel on both his Facebook and Twitter pages.
